The National Archives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia is digitizing ancient historical documents. The collection of originals of Georgian historical documents preserved in the Old Documents Department of the Historical Archive dates back to the XI-XIX centuries, of which electronic versions of more than 4000 documents (up to 4500 sheets) have already been created.

The digitization process is carried out with modern equipment, which ensures the most secure copying of ancient documents and protection from damage. The special photo lens and lighting, which is equipped with a contactless scanner, captures even the smallest detail of the document with high quality.

The electronic files are included in a special program (ICA ATOM) developed by the International Council on Archives (ICA) and fully comply with international inventory standards. Each document is accompanied by a description: technical characteristics (date of creation, size, type of paper, etc.), a summary, the persons mentioned in it, a copyist, the place of copying and other descriptions specific to the document.

The program provides a document retrieval in the shortest time according to any of the above characteristics. Through a special search catalog, all interested persons will be able to see a document of interest to them without leaving home and get acquainted with its description.

The materials preserved in the Old Documents section are varied in content. They include books of mercy and redemption, various legal monuments, documents of religious content, which reflect the public and political life of Georgia, issues of feudal land ownership, customs, customs system, construction of towns and villages, the state of the church and its role in government. The documents are of great historical importance, as most of them were issued by kings, Catholics and nobles working in this period and, in many cases, are certified by their own signatures.

Creating electronic copies of the collection of originals of old documents will make it possible to avoid frequent use of documents, thus ensuring their long-term protection. At the same time, digital copies of the documents will be available to any person or researcher interested in the old documents preserved in the National Archives in the shortest possible time.
