Electronic Archive of the Belgian Brother Muls was transferred to the National Archives

Ms. Teona Iashvili, General Director of the National Archives of Georgia met Mrs. Rita Calcoen and Mr. Michel Vermote, the members of the delegation of the Institute of the Social History of Belgium. The guests brought to Tbilisi the digital copies of the materials transferred to the National Archives of Georgia by the posterity of the Belgian Brothers Muls.

“These materials, found by our Belgian colleagues at the prosperity of Muls, will promote the definition of the history of industrial development”, - mentioned Ms. Teona Iashvili.

One of the brother August Muls came to Georgia in 1908 and became the manager of the French based “Societe des Mines de Manganese de Darkveti”. In 1910 he employed his brother Henri, who was an engineer. In 1913 younger brother Pieter came over to assist them. At the outbreak of the World War I the whole Muls family moved to Georgia and remained here till 1926.

According to Mrs. Rita Calcoen, these materials contain the digital copies of about 2000 letters and 200 photos that are dated back with 1909-1926. The cultural and industrial life of Georgia of the mentioned period is described here; he photos depict manganese mines, technical equipment, labour relations, and village inhabitants, their traditions, views, etc. The written documents are mainly compiled in Flemish and French languages.

At the meeting the sides agreed that the exhibition of the Muls archive will be held in Georgia next year.

It’s worth mentioning that the National Archives of Georgia cooperates with the Institute of the Social History since 2011. The sides have already changed not one digital copy of interesting archival materials.
