National Archives of Georgia Participated in Discussion on the Role of Archives in the Context of International Research Projects

The National Archives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, participated in the international workshop, "Foreign Expatriates in the South Caucasus: International Family Enterprises in Georgia and Azerbaijan, 1850–1925," organized by the Georgian Branch Office of Max Weber Foundation.

During the event, participants discussed the activities of entrepreneurs from Baltic to the Black and Caspian Seas; the Oil Rush in Baku; transnational and global connections existing within and beyond the South Caucasus; and the experiences of workers, women, and refugees.

The concluding section of the workshop featured a roundtable discussion. Sandra Dahlke, Director of the Max Weber Eastern European Network, focused on the role of archives in researching the history of migration, expatriates, and entrepreneurship in the South Caucasus. The Director General of the National Archives of Georgia, Teona Iashvili, discussed the collections preserved in the National Archives, the past and ongoing projects implemented by the Archive in the context of documents’ digitization, preservation, and accessibility, as well as supporting international research endeavors.

The meeting was organized by the Georgian Branch Office of Max Weber Foundation, the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki, and the Max Weber Eastern European Network.

It is worth noting that the National Archives of Georgia actively cooperates with the Georgian Branch Office of Max Weber Foundation, which was officially established by a memorandum signed in 2024. Additionally, the Archive signed a cooperation memorandum with the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki, and this workshop represents the first joint event by these agencies.
